THE BEST TECHNOLOGY I USE IN MY LAW PRACTICE

THE BEST TECHNOLOGY I USE IN MY LAW PRACTICE

When I started practicing law thirty years ago, computers were almost non- existent in the practice of law. Perhaps the biggest Manhattan law firms had computers, but few other law firms used them. In fact, I did not have a computer until five years after I became licensed as a lawyer. My first computer literally came with 200 megabytes of storage on the hard drive. Yes, I said megabytes – the entire computer hard drive would hold just a few of today’s digital photos. And yet it held my thousands of legal documents and did just fine.

Being a fan of technology, I have constantly adapted to the point now where I use many different types of technology to run my practice. One of my favorite tools is called MyCase legal software. The features are too numerous to mention, but a couple of the best ones relates to document management. Instead of sending documents via email, it allows documents to be uploaded by both the client and the law firm and provide access by both parties to everything in the client’s various folders. The client is sent an invitation to set up their own username and password and they can access their dedicated MyCase file directly through my law firm’s website.

The documents are uploaded or downloaded on a highly secure encrypted system which is considered much safer than email. Of course there are services like dropbox or mybox, but those don’t directly integrate into the overall legal practice software and also have to manually be placed into the client’s folder.

Also, any changes made to the folder by either the client or attorney are tracked via the dedicated feed related to that client.

Using the same client folder, the attorney can also send their invoice so the client has the ability to review it and ask any questions they may have. When they are ready to pay it, the client can just use the integrated payment option to take care of the invoice. There is also the option of either party making notes in the system that can be saved to the same folder.

As you might expect, the MyCase software is available on both Macs, PCs as well as iPads and mobile phones. So, whether the attorney is at the office or at the courthouse, all of the documents and information are available instantly. Our clients benefit because everyone has access to the same information instantly and any pleadings we have prepared or filed are available for the client to review and confirm that they were filed. We believe keeping our clients up to date and informed helps them relax about their case and know it is in good hands.
